Introduction

In the information age, data (accurate data) is the raw material that produces the priced finished product, “information.” Raw data like any other raw material such as gold has to go through some refining processes in order to release its innate potentials and magic powers. That is where data analysis comes in.

Data Analysis

Data analysis is all about turning raw data into valuable information. It is a process that starts with data collection, data entry, data cleaning, data analysis, data visualization and then interpretation of results. The goal of data analysis is to obtain meaningful information from data.

Types of Data Analysis

Data analysis can be broken down into several types depending on the goal of the analysis.
  • Descriptive analysis provides an answer to the question "what happened?” This is done by summarizing historical data. It is usually the initial step in data analysis in most companies or enterprises. An example of a descriptive analysis in a business firm could be a monthly sales report showing revenue trends.
  • Diagnostic analysis examines the reason for the occurrence of a situation. It provides an answer to the question “why did it happen?” by identifying causes and correlations. An example of diagnostic analysis is evaluating customer feedback to find out why satisfaction dropped.
  • Predictive analysis is aimed at using historical and current data to forecast future outcomes. It seeks to provide an answer to the question “what will happen?” An example of predictive analysis would be predicting future sales based on past performance and market trends
  • Prescriptive analysis determines the next line of action by recommending actions based on insights from data. It answers the question "What should we do?” A good example could be suggesting optimal pricing strategies to maximize profit.

Data analysis follows a process from the raw data to useful insights. These can also be called the steps to data analysis. They are as follows:
  1. Definition of objectives
    This means clearly stating what you aim to achieve with data analysis. This could also be termed the definition of a problem. This would help to inform on the type of analysis to conduct. Clearly stated objectives inform the next steps, and reduces the likelihood for misinterpretation.
  2. Data collection
    Data collection involves the gathering of relevant data from various sources. Data can be collected from surveys, interviews, journal articles, books or from databases. It is a very important stage in the process because the quality of information or result obtained from the analysis is largely dependent on the quality of data collected.
  3. Data entry
    This is the entering of data into a spreadsheet or a data entry platform . Platforms like Excel or Google Sheets can be used to enter data. The act of entering data requires careful, and accurate work combined with speed to avoid errors in the data.
  4. Data cleaning
    This stage is important because data can come in a variety of formats, structured and unstructured data. It involves cleaning and organizing the data for analysis. This is the data processing stage. At this stage data errors like outliers, missing data are identified, corrected or eliminated. Data cleanings aims to ensure that quality data is used for the analysis.
  5. Data analysis
    Data analysis is the crux of the process. It is the use of analytical methods and tools to examine the data. Data can be analyzed using tools such as python, R, Stata. The choice of the tool to use depends on various factors such as know-how, user friendly interface, type and volume of data and discipline or sector of the research.
  6. Data visualization
    This involves the creation of visual representations to communicate findings. Tableau and Power BI are examples of widely used data visualization tools. Data can be presented in the form of charts or graphs. These make for easy appreciation of the result of the analysis .
  7. Result Interpretation
    This makes the information accessible to everyone. The goal of conducting the analysis is achieved when the question can be answered from the result. And recommendations are made based on the result analysis.

Use of Data Analysis in Different sectors

Data analysis is a vital tool across various sectors. These sectors cut across different human endeavors both at public and private sectors and even at the individual level. Data analysis drives growth and productivity increasing success levels in the achievement of goals.

  3. Statistical Analysis System(SAS) is a robust software suite for advanced analytics, data mining, and decision support. It’s scalable and widely used in business intelligence.
  4. Statistical Product for Service Solutions(SPSS) is user-friendly software for statistical analysis. It is popular in survey analysis, market research, and academic research.
  5. Stata is a powerful statistical software package known for its user-friendly interface and comprehensive data management. It is especially popular in social sciences and biostatistics.
